What is Yoga Therapy? It is NOT talking therapy such as CBT. It is NOT physiotherapy although it is complemetary to both. Yoga Therapy is the method to working with an individual, who has specific health challenges or wellness goal. Yoga Therapy is a framework which should be heavily informed by scientific research. It aims to alleviate symptoms, reverse health challenges or even prevent them. Top down and bottom up

What about trauma? A YT will have specific detailed training around the subject of trauma PTSD and CPTSD. They will understand how trauma can affect the brain, the body, the way we process information, other symptoms that may arise such as poor sleep, memory recall etc. A Yoga Therapist can work with you to help alleviate some of the symptoms and offer you tools to deal with overwhelm, stress, panic, anxiety, insomnia, etc. Yoga Therapy is a complimentary practice to other trauma treatments. A YT is trained in holding a space skillfully, ensuring that foundation work has been set to inform safety and emotional regulation skills. A YT is also trained in how to support students who experience panic and anxiety attacks. There are many short CPD courses which are helping to ensure yoga teachers are trauma aware which is great?, However a YT can support you in working directly with the symptoms you are exeriencing in a multi dimensional, mind-body approach.

When might you want to work with a Yoga Therapist instead of attending a group class? You might have been to a yoga class which leaves you feeling depleted of energy rather than relaxed and alert? restored. A general class may have aggravated an injury. It may not be addressing your specific needs. You may enjoy the class but want to hone in more deeply to an specific area, such as resilience, emotional regulation, strength, lifestyle, flexibilty of mind, stress control etc.
